Educational information only
PCRA publishes explanations to help individuals and families understand terminology, records, procedural paths, sentencing concepts, and executive relief. The information is general, may be incomplete for a particular case, and is not legal advice.
Deadlines require immediate verification
Appeal, post-conviction, habeas, sentence-modification, grievance, notice, and other deadlines can be short and can depend on events not visible from a judgment alone. Do not wait for a website response. Obtain the docket, applicable rules, and qualified case-specific review promptly.
Pleas, waivers, default, and prior filings matter
A guilty plea or appeal waiver may limit—but does not automatically answer—what can be challenged. Failure to appeal, prior collateral filings, procedural default, custody status, preservation, exhaustion, authorization requirements, and exceptions can materially change the analysis.
Tools are not eligibility decisions
The Relief Navigator identifies questions and possible paths based on user selections; it does not determine eligibility or recommend a filing. The federal sentencing and BOP estimators provide educational estimates based on the answers supplied. They do not bind a court or the Bureau of Prisons and do not guarantee a guideline range, sentence, institution, security level, custody level, camp placement, First Step Act credit, Second Chance Act placement, RDAP admission, early-release reduction, or release date.
Executive relief and record effect
Clemency, commutation, and pardons have different effects. A pardon does not necessarily expunge, seal, erase, or make a conviction “disappear.” Consequences depend on the issuing authority and applicable federal or state law.
Law and policy information changes
Statutes, guidelines, rules, cases, agency policies, proposals, and official interpretations change. A bill is not law. An enacted change may not be retroactive or available to every person. Verify status and effective dates in official sources.
No representation or guaranteed result
Use of this site or contact with PCRA does not create representation. PCRA does not guarantee acceptance of a matter, a filing, government action, release, sentence reduction, pardon, or any other result. Any accepted services depend on the matter, jurisdiction, authorization, and a written agreement.
Emergencies
This site is not monitored as an emergency service. For immediate danger or medical crisis, contact appropriate facility personnel, 911 where available, the responsible corrections agency, or another emergency resource.
